Nyota is a relatively large lioness, standing at 3.6 feet at the shoulder and weighing 310 pounds. Her fur is of a solid color, pale and resembling what we would know as eggnog. The tip of her long tail is a darker brown, and the fur puffs out slightly at the end. She is a well-built lioness, with strong bones and the powerful jaws found typical in lions. Her eyes are a shimmering sapphire blue, set against the cream color of her face and resembling one of the many shades of the night sky. There is a black rim around her eyelids, bordering the deep blue tone of her eyes. Nyota’s lips are the color of burnt wood, a mix of black and dark brown that when pulled back reveal stained ivory teeth. The edges of her nose are black, a continuation of the pigment running along her lips, though the inside of her nose is a soft pink color, flecked with darker spots. Her paw pads are similar, mostly of a dark color though with splotches of pink along her toes and dew claw. Though her coat remains for the most part solid, darker cream hues play along her ears and muzzle, and the part of her mouth where the whiskers are found is an even paler shade of the color of her base coat. Tufts of slightly darker fur line the edges of her paws. Nyota’s pale, unmarked tongue is lined with tiny barbs that have the texture of sandpaper, a feature found on lions that is useful in cleaning cubs. Though perhaps not as eye-catching as other lionesses, Nyota is vain and takes deep pride in her appearance.

Brash as she seems, Nyota is really a nice lion. Despite her hardened exterior - gained from all she went through to get here - Nyota is a joy to be around. She loves to joke around, and speaks with sarcasm more often than not. Her defenses aren't hard to get past, and Nyota has hardly even realized that she has put up these walls. Nyota enjoys company, and takes a particular liking to meaningful conversations, believing they bring bonding and a shared closeness. Nyota is a good listener, and will do her best to assist others in what they may be going through.

Nyota was born off the reservation to two lone lions, Kubwa and Korofi. Kubwa was temperamental and rude, and Korofi was the poor, shy lioness unable to stand up for herself. Korofi had never wanted children in the first place, though Kubwa refused to accept that and soon Korofi was pregnant. For the duration of her pregnancy, she saw a shift in Kubwa. He became pleasant to be around, protective but kind. Perhaps, Korofi had thought, things weren’t all that bad.

But that changed when the cubs were born. Kubwa turned his back on Korofi, ignoring her existence as he smothered his three cubs with attention and affection. But as they grew, even that changed. Nyota and her siblings, Kiburi and Furaha, had to fight for their father’s attention. One day this went to far, each sibling daring the other to do something increasingly dangerous. When Kubwa found out, he was furious. In a fit of rage, he swung his paw at the cubs and cut off the tip of Nyota’s ear. After that, Nyota gave up trying to impress her father, leaving the dangerous stunts to her brothers. Nyota had her mother, so eventually became less bothered by her father’s actions. But her brothers had no one, and so they proceeded in their attempts to gather the attention of Kubwa.

Her father had a loud mouth. Everyone knew it. And eventually someone got fed up. Nyota knew not who did it, but someone had killed her father. They found him bleeding, fur in his claws and eyes glazed over. Nyota could pick up a scent, but having never been acquainted with other lions she was lost as to who it belonged to. For a while her brothers mourned they never earned his affections, but after some time they felt liberated.

Life was good. The cubs grew and prospered, with Korofi doing her best to teach them the things their father never good. But the peace didn’t last long. Living off the reservation had some dangers, and they weren’t lucky enough to never face them.
Korofi caught word of hunters storming the land, and attempted to move her family. Her efforts where in vain, however, as the hunters were upon them. The family of four scattered, as Nyota and her siblings were old enough to fend for themselves, agreeing to meet back up when the danger passed. Nyota scattered, taking shelter. After several days, they gathered again in the agreed upon spot. But Furaha did not show up. Refusing to believe he was dead, the family searched for him but to no avail.

Life went on, and eventually it was time for Nyota and Kiburi to leave. They parted with their mother and set out into the world. The two stay together for a time, but eventually found they had differing views. Nyota wanted to travel to the reservation, to safety, but Kiburi believed it not necessary, and a waste of time. Not able to come to an agreement, the two split up.

Nyota wasted no time heading to the reservation, though the journey was long and dangerous. She faced many threats and was hardened against the world after fighting with lions and other predators and wrestling with abstaining from starvation. Eventually she came across the reservation, battered and worn but well-learned.
